Happy New Year to all ! This season the gardens are all to bed , and usually we have a covering of ice and snow on the ground. Two days ago we did , lots of snow , ice and cold , but a warm wind has blown in and in the last 48 hours melted all of the snow and ice .... yea... finally a fresh start to the snow shoveling that was never done while I took a brief sojourn to warmer climates... I always say , it never snows in the beginning of December ...but the truth is we do get alot of nasty winter weather at that time ... well I wish all of the readers a warm happy new year... may the new year bring you much growth in your gardens... Enjoy ...

December 20

Winter solstice. It is the cusp of the winter solstice today and it will also be a full moon. I am not sure what significance that has , but it seems like it should. With the plants dormant for the winter, we turn our eyes to the structure that is left in the gardens ... the architecture, woody stems, wispy grasses even the evergreens that make for a nice contrast to the white landscape. Many of us have put holiday lights on our trees and structures to light the way for any visitors that may come. here we have a visit from the resident hawk... he or she, i am not sure , makes a visit here every year this week. If I were a more spiritual person this might take on a different meaning. But I think the hawk may be in the area as it hunts for food and with the food being more scarce it ventures out to further areas ...this just happens to be here...but it is odd that it chooses our deck to enjoy its meal... we all this rant is that ...to me this hawk represents the winter turning... we have reached the longest darkness period in the northern hemisphere.. it is equal ...the world is in balance now. perhaps if our lives are not in balance , now is the time we understand what is out of balance..perhaps the full moon will create more of an atmosphere to change the imbalance in our lives...or perhaps it is just going to be one beautiful evening...that is if it is clear... here in the midwest land, near Chicago , we are expecting snow...it seems as if we will have a white christmas! Enjoy the rest and peace of the winter landscapes. and may season bring surprises to your landscape!
