Midsummer Day!

Midsummer Day

Although Midsummer Day occurs near the summer solstice, or what we think of as the beginning of summer, to the farmer it is the midpoint of the growing season, halfway between planting and harvesting, and an occasion for celebration. Although it's also the feast day of St. John the Baptist, it features pagan traditions such as bonfires, fire walking, and a carnival atmosphere, all of which took place on Midsummer Eve. Certainly, it's a night of magic and soothsaying as well, for as Washington Irving said, this is a time "when it is well known all kinds of ghosts, goblins, and fairies become visible and walk abroad." After Midsummer Day, the days shorten. In Lithuanian tradition, the dew on Midsummer Day was said to make young girls beautiful and old people look younger. It was also thought that walking barefoot in the dew would keep one's skin from getting chapped. It was customary to honor all men named John on this day by fixing wreaths of oak leaves around their doors. This is usually done in secret, and John must guess who did it or catch the person in the act, in which case he must give the person a treat.

a few years back....

here are some pictures of a garden that I did a few years back.... ( I cannot quite remember the years) but today we went back to add a few things and look what wonderful lushness I found!!! I love this "blue-stone" patio, the center stones are from an old commercial bakery oven...

these trees, european hornbeam, is that carpinus, yes it is I had to look that up .... they are a wonderful tall hedge screen , takes a bit to get going but they are worth it ... these are used as a screen from the express-way that travels right behind this property...if the cars had no sound , this would be idealistic garden spot

where is it now

This garden is one that is an on going project that i like to call project rescue.... this garden has lots of great plants and wonderful space, but is need of a little organization and clean up ... we have started transforming this garden and phase one has been completed... now to get someone to cut the grass...

beers and gardens!

so we are working away at Paddy Long's , in Chicago, added a small brick area for the grand deluxe pig pit roaster to sit on ... seriously this is serious....I took some pictures of Eddie's garden , and how it is coming along ...and...we have new plantings in the front patio boxes to highlight the new paint job!!!.... we are now getting into what is usually the after annuals slump... time to get back through all the gardens and weed weed weed... We have been blessed with some good rain fall in May and continuing this week it seems... the weather is cooler but supposed to heat up... with a few thunder storms... it seems early to have all these thunder storms ..i love em they make me think of summer days....
